I don’t have patient contact. And it took everything in me to not go in her room and cry with her. It broke my heart. It’s just how my brain is. I physically feel someone else’s pain because I can put myself in their place. It can be agonizing at times. We are all different and that’s ok. Damn, I actually wish I had this problem! Whenever someone is crying next to me, in front of me, friend, mother, whatever.

I just shut down. Like, I have no trouble at all empathizing with them and trying to imagine how horrible it is they feel, but I just don’t feel it like I’m in their shoes, you know? Don’t be worried. I said it in Official Ain’t Texas Shirt, but everyone’s brains are different. We handle emotion and trauma differently. My empathy comes from years of trauma. Sometimes we need someone who is not breaking down and just there for us when we cry. Just do your best for active listening and hugs if wanted/needed. I had to go into the office in person two weeks ago for a couple hours. There were two other people on the deserted third floor and they were in a virtual meeting with their entire department when I arrived.
