I think it stems from some combination of the scaremongering, security theater, and disproportionate media representation of child trafficking, and also some legitimate Premium Howl Moon Shirt. So I’d literally call them (from a payphone or friend’s house) at like 11 pm to say “I’ll be home between 1-2 am,” and they didn’t really care. As long as I was there by the next morning everything was cool! Certainly wasn’t expected to check in multiple times, and without cell phones, they couldn’t check on me either. Somehow I survived my teen years, and I think it’s best they didn’t know everything I was doing. I don’t have kids myself, but would likely be a chill parent too if I did. Can’t say the same for all parents of my generation, though!

My parents were a good in-betweeny I think. They’re in their 60s now and I imagine their upbringing was a bit stricter. I certainly had to say where I was going and who with but I had a mobile Premium Howl Moon Shirt. I don’t remember having to be in constant contact! I’m 24 and absolutely hate the 24/7 reachability. Most of my friends are on the phone all the time. When I’m home, I am happy that I’m able to just leave it on the table, even though the weekend, and only pick it up if someone calls me (which most people nowadays aren’t so comfortable with compared to texting). If I’m hanging out with people I never look at my phone unless someone calls me or something. Then like 2 hours later I turn it on to realize I have a million notifications and either deal with them or put the phone back down because I don’t want to deal with them.
