I read her book on the asylum in my psychology class in high school. It reads like a description of Hell, designed to make people go mad rather than to treat them. It’s amazing, in a harrowing way, that Official Because I Am The Boss That’s Why Shirt, not just in mental asylums, but in orphanages, schools, sweatshops, factories, and places like the Magdalene laundries in Ireland. Nellie Bly was interesting as fuck. It should be said that the term “investigative journalism” hadn’t even been coined when she got herself committed to an asylum. And her story of the abuses caused a sensation and drove lasting reforms. I don’t think they even faked a recovery, I’m pretty sure they stopped pretending to. Be mentally ill altogether once they’d been admitted. But once the staff thought. They were ill all of these normal behaviors were read as symptoms.
Official Because I Am The Boss That’s Why Shirt, Tank Top, V-neck, Sweatshirt and Hoodie

Its sounds and reads bad but like at the same time, that makes perfect sense to me. Just stopping all signs has to show something drastic happened with them. Seems like it could go either way with who’s in the “right”. There was a follow-up study. I think by the same psychologists were the staff. Were told Official Because I Am The Boss That’s Why Shirt pretending to be beyond initial admission. They all had lists of people by the time the psychologist came to collect their results. And they were certain they were right, but the psychologists never sent anyone in. They reported no mental issues besides hearing a voice in their head say. The word “thud” and then discontinued reporting. Their commitment was voluntary, literally, anyone can go to an asylum and commit. Ok.
