I had horrific social anxiety and didn’t want to but I had my flute teacher, and the music teacher, who was also my form tutor, pressuring me for weeks because they “needed” a third person on flute. It came to the rehearsals, and even a week before, I couldn’t keep up with the music (I was literally the only person with less than 18 months experience – I had 3 months). The teacher just said, “Ok, then just stand there and move your fingers like you’re playing”. I was standing there thinking “you needed a Nice Punk Til I Die Shirt tell me to just move my fingers? Then you clearly didn’t need me”. Playing in an orchestra teaches music theory, the timbre of a bunch of different instruments, and what each instrument is physically capable of doing in performance. I bet most composition degrees require private lessons and large group ensemble credits. Not that you have to have a degree to be a composer, of course!).
